One of my favorite things to do is to cleanse my bedroom with sacred smoke by burning sage or palo santo and setting an intention to rid my space of negative energy and usher in new, positive vibes instead.

To help explain where smoke cleansing originated, Neelou Malekpour, founder and creative principal of Smudged and author of The Art of Sacred Smoke: Energy-Balancing Rituals to Cleanse, Protect, and Empower, let us borrow this excerpt from her book:
“The act of using smoke from herbs and flowers to cleanse and purify a person or a space, or in sacred ceremonies can be seen in all cultures, spanning all of time. While the specific herbs used and the methods employed might vary slightly depending on region or spiritual practice, these ancient rituals are mystical and evocative, unifying all of humanity with the transformative element of fire. Sacred smoke has the power to magnify the voice of our intuition, to bless whatever it touches, and most importantly, it contains the power to deflect and transform unwanted energy.”
Why smudge your bedroom
“Cleansing our space is like taking a shower,” Malekpour tells Saatva. “We shower to remove physical debris and bacteria from our bodies. We smoke cleanse to remove energetic debris from our subtle body, from a room, and also to protect the space as well.”
Don’t worry about what type of smoke you use to cleanse your space, says Malekpour. It’s more important to focus on your intention.
“My favorite herbs right now are a combination of wild rue and rose,” she says. “In my opinion, wild rue is the third-degree black belt of sacred smoke and rose elevates my vibration and invites love and sweetness.”
How to smudge your bedroom
Malekpour says smudging or cleansing your space with sacred smoke is a deeply personal act. Therefore, you should work with whatever ritual feels best for you. However, she does note three “rules” you should always follow when cleansing.
- Gratitude: “I always take a month to thank the herb/plant I’m using, the earth for all that she provides us, the element of fire for the transformation taking place, and the teachers and cultures who bring us these practices,” says Malekpour.
- Open windows: Make sure to cleanse in a well-ventilated space. “Not only is it not great to inhale smoke but also, the lower frequencies being released need somewhere to go,” says Malekpour.
- Set a clear intention: “The herb you use is not as important as the intention behind it,” says Malekpour. “Intention is everything!” (Here are a few bedtime affirmations to consider.)
How often to smudge your bedroom
As long as you have proper ventilation, you may cleanse as often as you’d like. I cleanse whenever I feel like my space needs it. This can be as often as once a week or even every couple of days.
What are the rules of smudging?
To respect the practice and honor all of the ancestors who came before you, “always procure plants from ethical retailers,” says Malekpour. “There is a lot of damage being done to the earth in the name of smoke cleansing; be mindful please!”
How do you properly smudge a room?
Set an intention and say a brief prayer of gratitude for the smoke you’re burning and anything else you want to thank. Make sure to open a window so the negative energy can go out and so that you don’t inhale smoke.
