Winter is the ideal season to embrace hygge—a Danish concept of coziness, calm, and connection. Designers suggest creating a hygge bedroom with natural materials, soothing colors, layered bedding, warm lighting, and meaningful objects. The goal is a simple, clutter-free space that promotes rest, warmth, and mindful comfort.

Winter is the perfect time to get comfortable and cozy. It’s also a great time to introduce the concept of hygge to your home. Hygge, pronounced hyoo-guh, is a Danish trend that can be applied to your entire home, including the bedroom.

If you find yourself wondering how to create a hygge bedroom or how to hygge your bedroom for winter, we’ve got you covered. We chatted with interior designers about how to create a hygge bedroom just in time for the winter hibernation season. Cozy hygge bedroom, coming right up!

What is hygge?

First things first: What is hygge? “At its core, hygge is about comfort, calm, and connection,” says Anika Tarasiewicz, an interior designer in New York City and founder and CEO of CRAFT by Anika. “It is a feeling as much as a mindset. Slowing down and surrounding yourself with things that feel good.”

What does hygge mean, exactly? “Hygge loosely translates to ‘coziness,’ and in practice generally means cultivating a sense of warmth and simplicity in your home,” says Courtney Batten, founder and lead interior designer at Paige Studio in Dallas, Texas. “It could also be described as ‘minimalism with soul’—think clean lines softened by natural textures and warm woods.”

Benefits of a hygge bedroom

Your environment—including light, noise, clutter, and even what your bedding feels like—can affect how easily your body winds down at night, notes Tarasiewicz.

“Hygge’s main sleep and health benefits come through the focus on minimizing overstimulation,” explains Batten. “Reducing clutter and creating a minimal and neutral but warm environment will help to calm the nervous system and make it easier to fall and stay asleep.”

When the lighting is soft, the textures are warm, and the room feels calm, your body starts to respond, adds Tarasiewicz.

“Your heart rate slows, breathing relaxes, and you feel more settled without even thinking about it,” she says. “The space around you feels like one big hug.”

How to create a hygge bedroom

1. Add natural materials

One of the first places to start when creating a cozy hygge bedroom is with natural materials. “Cottonlinen, stone, and wood can bring a sense of calm, comfort, and connection to the space,” shares Tarasiewicz. “Even adding a wooden tray or linen pillow can help shift the overall tone of the room.”

If you decide to incorporate more wood into your cozy hygge bedroom, Batten suggests sticking to typical wood species that are commonly found in Danish design: oak, teak, and walnut. “Select furniture pieces that let the natural wood grain shine with a natural clear coat instead of a heavy or dark stain,” says Batten.

2. Choose colors that calm you

Another hygge bedroom idea? Soothing colors. Tarasiewicz recommends muted blues, soft greens, and warm neutrals. “Pick what makes you feel at ease,” she says. “If the colors make you want to sink into bed and stay there a little longer, then you are on the right track.”

Batten suggests sticking to an earthy color palette of browns, off-whites, and warm greige. “Accent colors should be minimal and in earthy shades of muted blues, sage green, and terracotta,” she adds.

3. Display meaningful objects

Remember, hygge is all about thoughtful simplicity—so stick to displaying meaningful objects like a favorite book, a small piece of art, or a simple vase of dried flowers. “Quality over quantity is key for the hygge look,” says Batten.

4. Incorporate Danish pieces

Another way to create a cozy hygge bedroom is to incorporate vintage Danish furniture pieces. “Danish design was a huge part of the mid-century era,” explains Batten, “so if you can include a few original pieces into your hygge-inspired bedroom, it will add character and authenticity.”

5. Keep surfaces simple

Batten describes hygge as “minimalism with soul,” so when creating a hygge bedroom, keep surfaces simple.

“A cluttered nightstand or dresser can make the whole room feel busy and disorganized,” says Tarasiewicz. “Clear off what you do not need and keep what you use daily. A candle, a book, or a small dish for your jewelry is more than enough.”

Embrace hygge by layering bedding for texture that feels comforting.

6. Layer your bedding

One of the easiest ways to create a hygge bedroom is to layer bedding. “Start with breathable sheets, then add a quilt, a knit throw, or a textured blanket,” says Tarasiewicz. “The mix of textures feels comforting and gives you flexibility as the seasons shift.”

Don’t forget the pillows. “They need to be of good quality,” says Tarasiewicz. “After all, it is what you rest your head on each night.”

7. Make space for rest

One thing a hygge bedroom should have is a space for rest. “Hygge is about ease, not effort,” notes Tarasiewicz. “That means designing your space in a way that supports the quiet moments.”

Some ideas include adding a cozy chair in the corner with a blanket or quilt draped over it, creating a reading nook, and including an end table or beverage table for a favorite book you’re reading. “Any place or space for a small ritual that you can return to at the end of the day,” says Tarasiewicz.

Just be sure not to over-clutter anything or mindlessly fill the room with extra furniture. “All furniture should be intentionally chosen and serve a specific purpose,” says Batten. “Simplify the layout.”

8. Pay attention to finishes

If you plan on ordering new furniture for a hygge bedroom, Batten advises paying attention to finishes. “Choose brass over chrome or nickel finishes,” she says. “Warmer metals will emphasize the warm and cozy feel and complement the warm natural woods in the room.”

9. Try new textures

“Danish design, and the hygge trend, is all about texture,” says Batten. “Combine chunky knit throws, crisp linen sheets, wool rugs, and nubby pillows to add depth and softness” to your cozy hygge bedroom.

10. Use warm soft lighting

Creating a hygge bedroom also includes the element of lighting. “Having too many overhead lights can feel harsh, especially at night,” explains Tarasiewicz. “And if you do not have dimmers, there is no control.”

Instead, Tarasiewicz suggests trying table lamps or wall sconces to create a softer glow. “Lighting should make the room feel inviting and relaxing, not overstimulating,” she says.

For light bulbs, Batten recommends warm white bulbs, ideally around 2700 kelvin for that soft, warm glow, perfect for a cozy hygge bedroom.

If you plan on doing a total remodel, Batten also suggests the glow of a fireplace. “Nothing says hygge like soft, flickering light,” she says. If a fireplace isn’t in your budget, then try flickering battery-operated candles, which can also give off a lovely glow.
