Saatva Classic vs. Saatva Rx: 4 Key Differences

The Saatva Classic and Saatva Rx are two hybrid innerspring options, catering to different types of back pain. The Classic is designed for people with general aches,  while the Rx is designed for those with severe conditions like sciatica and herniated discs. The construction and feel differ between the two, with the Classic providing multiple comfort options for different sleep styles and the Rx offering one option to suit chronic back and joint conditions.

If you’ve ever experienced back pain, then you know it can seriously impact your ability to get a good night’s sleep. Luckily, the right mattress can help relieve some of the discomfort so you can snooze more easily. However, mattresses aren’t one-size-fits-all—and the best mattress for your back pain really depends on the type of pain you’re experiencing.

Two popular options for back pain are our

1. Who the mattresses are best for

The main difference between the Saatva Classic and Saatva Rx is who can benefit most from each mattress. For normal aches and pains, we recommend our best-selling Saatva Classic. It’s available in three firmness levels and contains our patented Lumbar Zone® Technology for healthy spinal alignment in any sleep position.

For those with severe and chronic back and joint conditions (such as sciatica, arthritis, herniated disc, and scoliosis), we recommend our Saatva Rx. It’s specially designed to give maximum support and pressure relief that can help alleviate the discomfort associated with these conditions.*1

2. What’s inside the mattresses

While the Saatva Classic and Saatva Rx are both hybrid innerspring mattresses, their construction is slightly different.

The Saatva Classic features a durable innerspring base coil unit that’s topped with a layer of responsive, individually pocketed coils that contour to your body to relieve pressure points. There are stronger and firmer coils in the center third of the mattress, where most of your body weight lies.

That’s topped with a CertiPUR-US®-certified high-density foam lumbar crown that offers excellent pressure-point relief and our Lumbar Zone® Active Wire to help keep your spine in healthy alignment. This provides excellent relief for normal achy backs and joints.

The Saatva Rx, on the other hand, has a pocketed comfort coil unit that’s topped with our Therapeutic Support Core. The Therapeutic Support Core features our innovative 2-inch Rx Foam Module encased on top of each individual pocketed coil. The modular foam design offers better motion isolation and body contouring than single-layer foams.

On top of this is a 1-inch micro-coil layer, which offers more flexibility than other coil types. The result is maximum pressure relief and body contouring for those with serious chronic back and joint issues.

3. How the mattresses feel

Another difference between the Saatva Classic and Saatva Rx is how the mattresses feel. Although they’re both hybrid innerspring mattresses, there are subtle differences when it comes to the way they feel when you lie down on them.

The Saatva Classic is available in three firmness levels, each with a different feel:

  • Plush Soft has a deep, body-hugging feel and is ideal for people who know they like a soft, cushiony feel; side sleepers who like extra contouring; and lighter-weight individuals who often find mattresses to be too firm.
  • Luxury Firm (our best-seller) is designed to replicate the comfort level used in luxury hotels. It provides a perfect balance of comfort and uplifting support and is great for all sleep styles as well as couples who can’t agree on a firmness level.
  • Firm is designed to feel like you’re lying on top of the mattress rather than sinking in. It’s ideal for people who know they want a very firm mattress; back and stomach sleepers; heavier body types; and if your doctor recommends an extra-firm mattress.

The Saatva Rx comes in one firmness level, Supportive Plush, which instantly relieves pressure points. It’s best suited for side sleepers but also great for back and combination sleepers who suffer from chronic back and joint conditions.

4. What the mattresses cost

Mattresses specifically designed for people with spinal conditions cost more due to the nature of the materials used and the construction of the mattress. That’s why the Saatva Rx comes with a higher price tag than the Saatva Classic.

Here’s the breakdown of our pricing for comparison:

  • Saatva Classic: $1,995 (queen)
  • Saatva Rx: $3,295 (queen)
