After spending 15 summers in Jamestown, Rhode Island, Dana and Donald Powers decided to make it their permanent home-with a little help from Saatva.
The Powers family, and the renovation of their century-old New England home, are the focus of This Old House’s 40th anniversary season, currently airing on PBS. The couple’s main goal: restoring the house to the cozy cottage it once was, while updating it for the modern age with energy-efficient systems and appliances and eco-friendly furnishings.
That’s how they discovered Saatva mattresses and bedding products, which they used to furnish their master bedroom (pictured above) and the rooms of their two young sons.
We did the research and found that Saatva mattresses are high quality, reasonably priced, and certified to meet environmental health and safety standards, Donald Powers says. And since they’re made in America, they arrived quickly right when we needed them.
Dana Powers also appreciated that Saatva’s mattresses and cotton sheets are not made with the use of irritating chemicals, so they were a good choice for her son Theo, who has allergies.
Donald and Dana aren’t your typical homeowners. Donald is an architect, and Dana is an operations manager at the architectural firm, so they know their way around a project like this. It was great to be involved in this project, particularly every step of the way both as the architect as I normally am but this time as the homeowner, Donald says.
The majority of the couple’s budget went to construction. They worked with Sweenor Builders to not only renovate the current structure of their cottage but also add an addition that doubled the size of the home. The Powerses paid special attention to creating spaces for family, like a den and music nook. A lot of hard work and planning went into the house, but we’re finally here and we love it, Dana says.
